The Most Important – And Possibly Life-Changing – Blog Post About Internet Marketing You Will Ever Read

by Bill on May 30, 2009

OK, that might sound like a kind of pretentious title for a blog post – especially my first blog post on this site – but I really believe this post could change your life.

If you let it.

It’s all about the one success ingredient that could propel 95% of all struggling online marketers to the level of success they’ve been dreaming of so quickly, it would make their heads spin. What is it?

Focus.

Before you blow off this post as a bunch of feel-good, motivational fluff, please do yourself a favor and hear me out. In fact, here’s a little test:

Do you currently have the focus to simply read the rest of this blog post?

Or did something else distract you already? Maybe that blinky thing on your browser toolbar. Or the sound of an email arriving, or your cell phone ringing, or a thought about something else.

I’m not trying to beat you up about this – I’m just speaking from my own past – and sometimes current – experience.

FOCUS IS DIFFICULT!

But it’s absolutely the key to all success in life. And it might not be the kind of focus that comes to mind.

I’m not talking about working day and night on a single project until it’s finished (although that can be very rewarding and profitable SOMETIMES). I’m just talking about keeping your mind focused on an objective and taking regular action steps towards its completion.

If you want to write a novel, chances are you won’t write it this afternoon. It will probably take you a while. So, write a few pages – or a chapter – today. Then, write more tomorrow, or this weekend, or at whatever regularly scheduled interval you set for yourself.

In a month or two, when you start to think, “I can’t do this. Why am I even trying?” just keep going. Do it anyway. Stick to your schedule. Believe in your project. Reserve judgment until it’s finished. Or, get some feedback along the way from a trusted advisor – a writing coach perhaps?

But, whatever you do, FINISH IT!

THAT’S focus.

If you apply this same focus and step-by-step work ethic to your internet marketing projects, I guarantee you will have results. They may be crappy results, or they may be great results. But at least you will have results, unlike most people’s results, which are half-finished and never-started projects that only give them psychic ammunition to bash all online marketing products and systems as scams and “too much work.”

Now, here’s another key…

LEARN from your results – good, bad, or otherwise.

Although just having results will put you in the top 10% of online marketers, actually learning from them and modifying your approach for your next project will put you in the top 1%.

And that’s when things REALLY start to happen.

So, what am I suggesting you actually do with this advice? Here are my strong suggestions to you (they’ve worked for me, although I do still struggle with them myself):

  • Spend some time learning about internet marketing in a helpful forum like http://warriorforum.com. Ask questions, find some things that interest you, and interact with the people that are (or seem to be) successful.
  • Pick an area to focus on and buy a money-making plan or some coaching, or just sign up to a FEW email lists so you can start to model what others are doing.
  • Get to work on that plan. Don’t stop until you are finished. Sure, take breaks and spread your work out over a few days or weeks if you need to, but stick to it until the end.
  • Ask questions of your coach or the system author. You’ll be surprised who will reply to a genuine email.
  • ONCE YOU’VE FINISHED THE PROJECT, look at your results. Did it work as promised? Are you happy with the results? If you did 5 or 10 more of these projects, would that bring you the income and lifestyle you’re looking for?
  • Pick another project. Using what you learned first time around, work a little smarter, a little more efficiently, and a little harder.

That’s it. It’s really that simple…and that difficult.

Find a plan, take some action, look at the results, modify your plan, take more action. Repeat.

If you get frustrated, stuck, or bored, here’s a magic little question that might help you keep going:

“What’s the very next thing I need to do for this project?” (Answer this with a simple task that will advance you towards completion of your project.)

Do that thing as soon as possible and take a short break. Then, ask it again.

Please, please, please let this post sink into your subconscious and work on building up your focus muscle. I can say with great conviction that it is the single most important muscle you can develop. It can quickly change your attitude, your skills, your business, your relationships, and your entire life.

Now, let’s get back to work, shall we?

Yeah, Ray. Sometimes the smallest, uncomfortable little thing can stop me in my tracks, and just doing that one little thing gives me a such a sense of accomplishment!

Hi Bill
Enjoyed this post and needed a little reminder about hanging in there.
Its often easy to start projects and yet not quite so easy to see them through in the long run!
Will make sure I put my nose back on the grindstone today!
Best wishes

Thanks, Julie. Don’t grind too hard – just a little bit each day works fine, which leaves your nose pretty much intact ;-)

Hi Bill, great to read! To focus on what you’re doing I think is the hardest things for most people. In today’s fast socieity, I think the art of focussing has been lost due “Instant” this and that.

As Alf wrote, and a powerful goal. I spent 3 days in Singapore with Jim Rohn doing one of his workshops with one day spent on Goals, and as he said to have that goal written down with steps to achieve it and the reason why you want it then FOCUS on each step involved you will always reach your target! You just cannot help reaching it!

Reading this post and the comments brought it all back – thanks for allowing me to push the refresh button and bring all of those memories back!

Thanks, Maggie. I would give my right arm to spend 3 days with Jim Rohn. I absolutely love him. I wore out side 3 of his cassette series, “The Art of Exceptional Living” a while back. With gems like, “Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better.” and “It’s not what happens – what happens, happens to everybody. It’s what you do about it that makes a difference in how your life turns out.”

Reading YOUR comment turned on the tape replay for me! :-)
